Pastoral Care
Listening Together for the Sacred in Your Life
An unhurried, confidential space to notice where the Holy is already moving in your story, and to be accompanied as you respond. No agenda, no doctrine to adopt, no problem you must bring. Only room for your soul to speak and be heard.
What Is Spiritual Direction/Companionship?
Spiritual direction is one of the oldest forms of soul care. For centuries, seekers have gone to wise, attentive companions, not to be told what to believe, but to be helped to listen: to their lives, to their longings, and to the quiet movements of the Sacred within them.
In our time together, you speak about whatever is alive in your spiritual life, and we listen for it together. A spiritual companion offers deep presence, gentle questions, honest reflection, and room for silence. Over time, many people find they can recognize grace more readily in ordinary days, make decisions from a more rooted place, and rest more fully in who they truly are.
Spiritual direction is not religious instruction, and it is not a fix for a problem. It is a relationship of trust in which your own experience of the Holy is treated as sacred ground.
Why We Say “Companionship”
The word “direction” can sound like someone steering you. That is not this work. The true Director is the Spirit, the Sacred, the deep wisdom already at work in you. Your companion walks beside you, holding the lantern while you find your own way. That is why we call it spiritual direction/companionship.
Many Traditions, One Practice
Nearly every wisdom tradition has honored the soul friend who walks with a seeker. Spiritual direction/companionship belongs to all of them.
Celtic Christian
Anam Cara
The “soul friend” of Irish monastic life, with whom one could share the hidden truths of the heart.
Desert Mothers & Fathers
Abba & Amma
Early Christian elders of the Egyptian desert, sought out by seekers for a word of wisdom and a listening presence.
Buddhist
Kalyāṇa-mitta
The “spiritual friend” whose companionship the Buddha called the whole of the holy life.
Sufi
Murshid
The guide of the Sufi path, who helps the seeker polish the mirror of the heart.
What We Might Explore Together
There is no set curriculum. You bring what is stirring, and we follow it with care. People often bring:
I
Your Relationship with the Sacred
How you experience God, Spirit, or Mystery, and how that relationship is changing.
II
Prayer, Meditation & Practice
Finding practices that truly nourish you, or tending one that has gone dry.
III
Doubt & Changing Beliefs
Deconstruction, reconstruction, and the holy questions that have no quick answers.
IV
Discernment at the Crossroads
Listening for wisdom in a decision, a calling, or a season of change.
V
The Sacred in Nature
Reading the Book of Nature, and the thin places where the veil feels near.
VI
Mystical & Numinous Experience
Moments of awe, union, silence, or presence that you long to understand and honor.
VII
Dreams, Symbols & the Inner Life
The images and quiet languages through which the soul speaks.
VIII
Shadow & Light
Welcoming home the exiled parts of yourself, and gathering the scattered sparks within.
What Happens in a Session
Each session is shaped by you. Nothing needs to be prepared, and there is nothing to get right. A conversation often moves like this:
I
Arriving
We begin by settling in, often with a moment of silence, a breath, or a lit candle.
II
Sharing
You speak about whatever is alive in you: an experience, a question, a longing, an ordinary day.
III
Listening Together
Your companion listens deeply, asks gentle questions, reflects back, and makes room for silence.
IV
Gathering
We close by noticing what to carry forward, with a blessing or prayer if you wish.

An Interfaith Hearth
Your Path Is Honored Here
You are welcome whether you are rooted in a single faith, drawing from many wells, spiritual but not religious, agnostic, atheist, deconstructing, or healing from religious harm. Casey’s own spirituality is shaped by the Mystic Christ, the contemplative traditions, and an earth-honoring reverence for the Book of Nature, but this space belongs to you. We will never try to convert you, steer you toward a tradition, or ask you to use language that is not your own.
Call it God, Spirit, Source, the Sacred, or Mystery. We will listen for it in your words.
Spiritual Direction/Companionship and Pastoral Counseling: What’s the Difference?
Both are offered at Sacred Hearth Pathways, and both are spiritual care. They simply ask different questions and move at different rhythms.
| Spiritual Direction/Companionship | Pastoral Counseling | |
|---|---|---|
| At its heart | Attending to your relationship with the Sacred as it unfolds over time. | Spiritually grounded care through a particular struggle, wound, or crisis. |
| The guiding question | “Where is the Holy moving in my life, and how am I responding?” | “How do I heal, cope, and find meaning in what I am facing?” |
| What you bring | Whatever is stirring in your spirit: prayer, practice, questions, experiences, ordinary days. | A specific concern: grief, a transition, a relationship, addiction recovery, a crisis of faith. |
| Your companion’s role | A contemplative listener. The true Director is the Spirit and your own inner wisdom. | An active, trauma-informed guide who offers structure, spiritual resources, and practices for healing. |
| Rhythm | Usually once a month, often over many seasons or years. | Usually weekly or every other week, for a season of focused care. |
| The aim | Formation and deepening. There is no problem to solve. | Healing and restoration. There is a burden to tend. |
Not Sure Which You Need?
You don’t have to know. Many people begin in pastoral counseling during a hard season and move into spiritual direction/companionship as life steadies. Others are in direction when a crisis arrives, and we shift our focus for a time. In our first conversation, we will discern together what will serve you best.
And Mental Health Care?
Neither spiritual direction/companionship nor pastoral counseling is psychotherapy. We do not diagnose or treat mental health conditions, and our care does not replace a licensed therapist, psychiatrist, or physician. Spiritual care can walk gracefully alongside clinical care, and when your needs reach beyond our scope, we will gladly help you find the right professional.
Is Spiritual Direction/Companionship for You?
It may be a good fit if…
- You sense the Sacred stirring and want to pay closer attention.
- Your beliefs are shifting, and you want a safe place to explore without pressure.
- Your prayer or meditation practice has gone quiet or dry.
- You are discerning a calling, a vocation, or a major life choice.
- You have had experiences of awe or mystery that you long to understand.
- You want a companion for the journey, not a set of answers.
When Another Kind of Care May Serve You Better
If you are in the middle of a crisis, fresh grief, or a painful struggle that needs focused support, pastoral counseling may be the gentler place to start. If you are experiencing thoughts of harm, severe depression or anxiety, or a mental health emergency, please reach out to a licensed professional, a local crisis line, or emergency services right away.
